Purpose. This plan protects everyone whose job may expose them to blood or other potentially infectious materials. It is reviewed at least every year and whenever tasks or devices change.
Who is covered. All clinical and laboratory staff, including physicians. Training happens at assignment and every year after.
Controls. Use safety-engineered sharps. Never recap a used needle. Dispose of sharps at the point of use in the closable, puncture-resistant containers in every exam room and the draw station.
Protective equipment. Gloves are worn for every blood draw and any contact with blood. Face and eye protection is worn when splashes are possible.
Hepatitis B vaccine. Offered free of charge within 10 working days of assignment. Anyone who declines signs the declination form and may change their mind at any time.
After an exposure. Wash the area, tell your supervisor immediately, and go to occupational health the same day. The exposure is recorded in the sharps injury log.
